Cute Band Alert!

Brooklyn-based We Are Scientists have been around for a few years now but I'd forgotten just how adorable these boys really are. Thankfully, the NME has released an interview with Chris and Keith of the band to show off the many attributes of these lovely lads. They manage to pull off the whole "indie-rock hipster" thing with a sense of humour and minus the douchebaggery the tends to go along with it.

Oh yeah, and their music is really great, too.

It's A Hit

Nobody Move

Note: If you go to the YouTube page for this video, you'll notice in the comments section that somebody claims the bear in the video is played by Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys). I suppose it's possible I'm not sure I believe it. Matt Helders I can see ramping it up into high gear but Turner...for some reason I can't picture that boy as being capable of more than a rather rambling stroll.

Lenny Kravitz Pulls A Reverse Janet Jackson

Um, Lenny, you're pants - they're kind of - pull up your - Lenny, no seriously, your pants - they're falling - I can see your...nevermind.

(Skip to about the 3:20 mark for the crack attack)

I know this footage is several days old (from last Sunday's Grey Cup halftime show) but I thought it was still worth posting for those who hadn't already experienced the viewing pleasure.

Hey, I Know This Guy

Um, that's all.

Dolly Parton + Amy Sedaris = All Kinds Of Surreal

There are no words to properly describe the video for Dolly Parton's new single Better Get to Livin'. That being said, um, I'm kind of digging the clip.

Yes, That Really Is George Michael

I'm not sure there's a Canadian television station that still airs Extras so the following promo for the upcoming Christmas special may have to tide us Ricky Gervais fans over for a good long while. Or we'll just get it from YouTube like we do everything else (including this clip). There's an added bonus for you Clive Owen and David Tennant fans out there - don't say I never do anything for you.

I'm Just Saying

Me and Merdypops just got back from seeing Debra DiGiovanni perform stand-up at the Diesel Playhouse, formerly the home of Second City (thanks to Merdypops for that bit of trivia).

The bill at the Diesel tonight also featured four other comedians (if you count the MC) including
Laurie Elliott and Kristen Von Hagen but Debra was the headliner and, most definitely, the star. If you've never seen Debra's stand-up, you need to get that sorted at the next opportunity. Here's a taste of Debra in action and then an interview where she discusses how she got started in the comedy industry.

Kind Of Like Cat Power, But More Emotionally Stable

Scout (neé Emma Louise) Niblett is a singer/songwriter originally from Nottingham, England. Her music is simple yet raw and powerful. She's fond of wearing wigs. She's currently touring with a drummer named Christmas Goddard who can pull off a pretty respectable Phil Collins-style drum solo on demand. Often, Scout provides her own drum accompaniment. She may or may not be dating Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy). She believes that everyone should have "a cute girl with pom poms...to spell out their name". Her latest album is called This Fool Can Die Now which includes the single Kiss featuring the aforementioned Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

Scout Niblett
is a secret that should be shared with the world, though there is a certain satisfaction in keeping her to yourself.

Please, Mutya, Come Back And Help These Poor Girls

To be honest, I've actually made peace with the Sugababes new lineup. I had issues with Amelle at first but she really is a good singer and I think she's doing quite a good job of carving out her own niche in the group.

That being said, the more recent Babes' videos have just been...unfortunate and the latest one - for the title track off their current album Change - seems to be following that trend.

Flowers shouldn't be creepy. I'm just saying.

The fact that this is a ballad does not justify this seasonal-themed nightmare - they've done these much better in the past.

Mutya never would have stood for all the floral crap.

Ladies And Gentleman...

...more Spiritualized footage - this time from Melissa. There is a bit of overlap from the previous videos that I posted but I thought you'd appreciate it anyway.

All Of My Tears

Walking With Jesus

Shine A Light

Ladies and Gentleman...

Looking at this footage, I'm reminded again of just how beautiful this concert was - honestly, it was quite an emotional experience for me.

Over the last few days, I've heard several reports of chatty people in the back of the venue who clearly had no interest or respect for what was happening on stage. I almost feel sorry for these people, because they missed a stellar performance. Of course, I feel much more sorry for all the other people who had their evening ruined by these inconsiderate boors.

OK, mini-rant done.

If you're interested, you can get a bit of an inside scoop on the tour by checking out the MySpace blog of touring violinist Paula Yoo. Actually, it's Paula's stuffed bear Bartlett who provides the commentary and he certainly is quite the the storyteller. Enjoy!

Billie Piper Is A Whore

More specifically, she's a call girl...in her new series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Below, Piper talks about the series on British chat show Parkinson.

She's definitely come a long way from her teen pop queen days which kicked off with her 1998 chart-topper Because We Want To (feel free to not watch the entire video).

Over the years, Piper has gained credibility as an actress in a variety of roles, most notably her breakout as Rose, companion to the title character on a more recent incarnation of Dr. Who (during her stint, The Doctor was played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant respectively). She left the series in 2006 to pursue other interests.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl makes it's Canadian debut on Showcase tomorrow (November 22) at 10pm.

Spaceman On Earth

Here's some video footage of the Toronto stop on the Spiritualized - Acoustic Mainlines tour.

It was an amazing concert, despite some random wankers yelling out rubbish, making out in front of me and crashing the stage to ask for hugs. I'm crap at reviews, so I'll forward you to one from yesterday's (November 19) Toronto Star which does quite a good job of capturing the experience.

At the risk of sounding like I'm boasting (though I might just be), I'll also mention that, because of some friends who know the band, I was able to join them for drinks and nosh after the concert. Everybody was really lovely and I'd just like to thank J (happy belated birthday), Doggen, Julie, Paula, Heather, April, Rich, Mick, Keiran and anyone else from the band/crew I've forgotten or was never quite introduced to for a wonderful evening of music. Hope you liked the poutine.

Cheers also to Melissa, Rani and Greg for the hook-up and to Stephanie for being the evening's unofficial chauffeur.

Broadcast On The L Word

Right off the top, I need to stress that the first video below is absolutely NSFW. Really, it's probably not suitable for any situation where there is unfamiliar company (possibly conservative and/or of delicate sensibilities) present. Just be careful who's around when you watch the clip and don't say I didn't warn you.

It's a scene from last night's (Canadian) airing of the season 4 finale of The L Word, in which some crazy-hot sex between Shane and Paige is juxtaposed with a candy-coloured fantasy sequence involving the same two characters in a "traditional" 60s-style, familial setting.

It's visually striking, to say the least, but what caught my attention most was the gorgeous background music. I recognized the song as Before We Begin, taken from the 2003 album HA HA Sound by one of my favourite bands, Broadcast.

You can check out more of Broadcast (minus the girlie show) via their official website or MySpace page. Here's the band in their video for Come On Let's Go, a track taken from their 2000 album The Noise Made By People.

B & B (And Kylie)

I recently saw the video for Beyoncé's latest single, Get Me Bodied, and it reminded me a lot of the video for the Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton 2003 solo track Maybe.

Beyoncé Get Me Bodied

Emma Bunton Maybe

Now, I realize that the 60s-inspired styling and choreography in both videos are far from original but there are a couple of dance breaks in the Beyoncé clip that look like they were lifted directly from Bunton's.

I wouldn't go so far as to call the similarity a straight rip-off but, seriously, somebody on Beyoncé's team needs a good slap. It was only a few months back that B took quite a bit of heat for her performance of this same song at the BET Awards which looked suspiciously like the opening number from Kylie Minogue's 2002 Fever tour (itself, a stylistic "borrowing" from the 1920s Fritz Lang film classic Metropolis).

I will give props to Beyoncé for throwing a bone to baby sister Solange Knowles and former Destiny's Child band mates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland, all of whom are in the video and look happy and relieved to appear in something that the general population might actually bother to watch.

I Think I Just Died Of Happiness

It was announced today that iconic British songstress Kate Bush has written and recorded the theme song for the upcoming film The Golden Compass, an adaptation of the Phlip Pullman novel (originally entitled Northern Lights), the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

The Bush song is called Lyra, named after Golden Compass lead character Lyra Belacqua. It will be her first new material since the release of her 2004 album Aerial.

The film will be released on December 7 and stars The Hotness aka Daniel Craig and, um, some other people, I guess. I'm sure you can get more information from the trailer below.

The last time I recall a Kate Bush song being used on a soundtrack was in 1987 for the film She's Having a Baby. The song is This Woman's Work, here in the original version...

...and the equally lovely 2001 remake by Maxwell.

Just so you know, I will spending the next few days downloading every Kate Bush song I own onto my iPod.

In Memoriam

No matter what you think of Kanye West, you can't deny that he adored his mother and you know he must be gutted at her sudden passing over the weekend.

I'm not even going to get into all the hubbub surrounding the death of Dr. Donda West but will, instead, point you to this recently released statement.

Also, check out this really sweet video of Kanye and his mom on the Ellen Degeneres Show.

I Just Got Totally Owned...

...by my substitute free weights instructor, Bettina.

Actually, to be fair (to myself), she pretty much owned the entire class.

I should probably mention that Bettina is right about on the cusp of her second and third trimester of pregnancy.

Even so, she always seemed to have way more weight on her bar than everyone else. Plus, she was super-energetic throughout the hour-long class, singing and dancing (yes, dancing, while lifting weights) and wondering aloud why the rest of us were so pokey about changing our weight-loads between sets.

LOL!

Just thought I'd share.

She Makes It Look So Good

I've been a fan of Toronto MC Masia One since I saw her tear it up at an NXNE showcase several years ago. More recently, I caught her performance as part of the Manifesto Festival back in September. During her set, she dropped the track Return of the B-Girl, the lead off single from her upcoming album Pulau. Check out the video below:

Unfortunately, Pulau won't be released in North America until sometime in the spring of 2008. In the meantime, you can hear tracks from the album on Masia's MySpace page. You can next catch her live (highly recommended) on November 17 as part of the Women Rockin' for Charity event in support of the Regent Park School of Music.

Send In The Clowns

The video for the Arctic Monkeys' song Teddy Picker was released yesterday and, though it's pretty simple (director Roman Coppola has one style and he's sticking to it), I think it's a good one.

Apparently, though, this track is the third official release from Favourite Worst Nightmare and I didn't think there had been one since the lead off single Brianstorm. See, this is the consequence of no longer having Top of the Pops in the world.

Seems that the forgotten middle song was Fluorescent Adolescent, a ridiculously catchy tune with a video that is frighteningly dominated by some bad-ass circus clowns.

Then I recalled this video for Another Pearl by Badly Drawn Boy. Now I'm curled up in the fetal position in a corner of my bedroom with the lights off.

There's nothing creepier than a clown.

Going, Going, Gone!

The Roberto Cavalli at H&M collection hit selected stores of the retail chain yesterday (November 8) and, apparently, completely sold out mere moments after doors opened. The following 2 videos show, respectively, Cavalli himself making an appearance at the 5th Ave/NYC launch and the relatively calm shoppers at a store in Stockholm.

Click here to witness the full on madness at the launch in Amsterdam. According to comments on the H&M blog, the launch in Toronto (Eaton Centre location) went much the same way.

Even if you didn't manage to snap up anything during yesterday's fashion frenzy, do not yet resign yourself to despair. In my experience with these H&M designer collections, though everything may sell out the first the day, a good potion of it tends to get returned over the following months.

You see, due to a generous H&M store policy, items purchased at this time of year need not be returned until the first week of January and people take advantage of that for a variety of reasons. There are those who purchased multiple items simply to try to sell them on eBay - whatever they can't get rid off goes back to the store. Many people decide they're going to buy an entire new wardrobe, then get their credit card bill a month later and decide that one good basic clothing item is probably all they really need. Still others can't be bothered to wait in the crazy long lines for the change room so just buy whatever catches their fancy, try everything on at home and return whatever looked better on the hanger.

I'm pretty sure that if you make a few random trips back to your local H&M over the next couple of months you'll probably be able to snag that one item you had your eye on that you thought was forever out of reach.

Soundtrack To A Life

I saw the move Juno for the second time last night and, I have to say, I think I'm as impressed with the soundtrack as I am with the film itself. Maybe it's the music geek in me but it was really cool for to have music that I would actually listen to played in the background and even incorporated into the plot.

I think it's fair to say that the soundtrack is dominated by the music of the The Moldy Peaches and their primary singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. In particular, the song Anyone Else But You (performed by The Moldy Peaches as well as Juno cast members Ellen Page and Michael Cera) could be considered the film's theme song. In an interview with /Film, director Jason Reitman reveals how he came to use so much of the band's work:

“At one point, I asked Ellen Page before we started shooting, ‘what do you think Juno listens to?’ And she said ‘The Moldy Peaches’. She went on my computer, played the songs, and I fell in love with it. Diablo and I discussed putting a Moldy Peaches song in it where the characters would sing to each other. I got in touch with Kimya Dawson of The Moldy Peaches and she started sending me her work, which was beautiful, and that became a lot of the soundtrack.”

Juno movie trailer featuring Anyone Else But You by The Moldy Peaches

iFilm also provides the following full soundtrack listing:

  • Once I Loved performed by Astrud Gilberto

  • All I Want Is You Written and Performed Barry Louis Polisar

  • Besame Mucho Performed by Trio Los Panchos

  • A Well Respected Man Performed by The Kinks

  • Doll Parts Written by Courtney Love Performed by Ellen Page and Jason Bateman

  • I’m Sticking With You Performed by The Velvet Underground

  • Dearest Performed by Buddy Holly

  • Why Bother Performed by tHe drop

  • Superstar Performed by Sonic Youth*

  • Piazza, New York Catcher and Expectations Performed by Belle & Sebastian

  • All the Young Dudes Performed by Mott The Hoople

  • Sea of Love Performed by Cat Power

  • Vampire Performed by Antsy Pants

*This song is actually a cover of The Carpenters classic which appeared on the tribute album If I Were A Carpenter - my friend Stephanie and I both own a copy and shared a giggle during the film when Jason Bateman's character held up the CD case.

The film also provides a pretty clever cameo in the form of Cut Chemist (formerly of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli who plays - drum roll please - a high school chemistry teacher.

Quality Control Jurassic 5 (Cut Chemist is the bushy-haired DJ)

Finally, as my friend Melissa pointed out, there's a (seemingly) unintentional cautionary tale underlined in the film. That cute indie-rock boy who knows about all the "important" bands and counts both Syd Barrett and Thurston Moore among his musical icons, while certainly fascinating and intriguing at the outset, will eventually grow up to be the bitter, unfulfilled man-boy (as portrayed by Jason Bateman in the film) and will only cause you heartbreak in the long term. Seriously. Unless this guy's self-lauded musical genius stands a viable chance of turning into a credible music career, you need to just walk away, otherwise there's nothing but misery and daily rants about Pitchfork Media to look forward to in both your futures.

NME Presents The Cool Class Of 2007

Nothing heralds the dwindling pages of the calendar like the inundation of "year end", "best of" and "top" whatever lists. Normally, I find this practise obnoxious as it really is just lazy journalism and quite presumptuous when you think about it. However, I'm going to give the NME credit for the dubious distinction of being the first ones (as far as I can tell) out of the gate with the 2007 edition of their, perhaps intentionally, ludicrous annual Cool List.

No idea who this bloke is but, according to the NME, he's super cool so I guess that's that.

Now, usually, if you aren't a UK resident and can't able to pick up the hard copy (available on newsstands now), you'd have to content yourself with the teaser of the top 10 that the NME sees fit to allow you via their website. This time out, thanks to the Manchester Evening News (which has a few things to say about the noticeable absence of Mancs in the top 10) I'm able to bring you the ranking in it's entirety. Note: last year's rankings, is applicable, appear in brackets.

1. Frank Carter - Gallows

2. Jamie Reynolds - Klaxons (13)

3. Lovefoxxx - CSS (10)

4. Ryan Jarman - The Cribs

5. Lethal Bizzle

6. Alex Turner - Arctic Monkeys (32)

7. Kate Nash

8. Amy Winehouse (50)

9. Beth Ditto - The Gossip (1)

10. Keith Richards - The Rolling Stones (26)

11. MIA

12. Thom Yorke - Radiohead (9)

13. Drew McConnell - Babyshambles

14. Prince

15. Tom Clarke - The Enemy

16. Noel Gallagher - Oasis

17. Hayley Williams - Paramore

18. Brandon's moustache - Brandon Flowers, The Killers

19. Matt Bellamy - Muse (27)

20. James Smith - Hadouken!

21. Caleb Followill - Kings of Leon

22. Matt Helders - Arctic Monkeys

23. Eddie Argos - Art Brut

24. Craig Finn - The Hold Steady

25. Morgan Yeah? - Does it Offend You, Yeah?

26. Simon Neil - Biffy Clyro - (28)

27. Simon Taylor - Klaxons

28. Karen O -
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

29. Kele Okereke - Bloc Party

30. Meg White - The White Stripes (24)

31. Tim Harrington - Les Savy Fav

32. Gerard Way - My Chemical Romance (8)

33. Jamie T

34. Pete Doherty - Babyshambles (28)

35. Lou Hayter - New Young Pony Club

36. Ian Brown

37. Joe Lean - Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong

38. Andy Burrows - Razorlight

39. Kyle Falconer - The View

40. Nicky Wire - Manic Street Preachers

41. Josh Homme - Queens of the Stone Age (34)

42. Cole Alexander - Black Lips

43. Suki - Real Heat

44. Brandon Flowers - The Killers (29)

45. Yannis Philippakis - Foals

46. Patrick Wolf (24)

47. Carlos D - Interpol

48. Santogold

49. Dev Hynes - Lightspeed Champion

50. Spider Webb - The Horrors

LOL at Brandon Flowers moustache ranking higher on the list than Flowers himself. I think it would have been far more appropriate to leave that twit off entirely and just let his facial hair represent him but so it goes.

I'm not gonna lie - I don't recognize about a quarter of the names on this list. I certainly have never heard of the dude who made the top spot. Obviously, that doesn't mean they aren't deserving of inclusion but it seems I'm not the only one having trouble accepting the outcome. The magazine website is allowing readers to construct their own top 10 and, as the voting stands now, it bares little resemblance to the one NME staffers came up with.

At the time I was writing up this post, only two names had made both lists: Lovefoxxx from CSS is #3 on the official list and #10 on the readers' choice while Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys moves up from a very respectable 6th place in the official ranking to #1 with the readers.

Oh Snoop!

Of the many fracas that Snoop Dogg has managed to entangle himself in over the past 18 months, the incident at Heathrow airport - which ultimately got the rapper banned from the UK - is probably the most infamous. Well, now you can watch all the shizzle that went down thanks to the seemingly omnipresent folks at TMZ.

Um, maybe it's me but it kind of seems like airport security totally overreacted to the situation. Granted, there's some time gaps in the video but, for the most part, it just looks like Snoop is running his mouth, then batons start flying, people start screaming and a bunch of bodies end up in a pile on the floor. WTF?!?

I have to admit, considering that this video basically shows the makings of a minor international incident, it certainly made me LOL quite a bit. From Snoop signing autographs for Korean tourists to pretty much calling his PA a punk-ass bitch for trying to cooperate with the authorities (quite out of line, I might add - props to the beleaguered assistant for defending himself), this clip has "comedy classic" written all over it. Except, you know, for the gratuitous acts of violence.

Radcliffe Comments On Dumble-ga(y)te

Harry Potter film star Daniel Radcliffe appeared on the British chat show (I love that term) Parkinson over the weekend to promote his upcoming BBC movie My Boy Jack. However, the conversation inevitably turned to the recent revelation by Potter author JK Rowling that the character of Albus Dumbledore is gay.

You'll note that the interview is posted here in two parts and the
Dumbledore discussion comes pretty much towards the end of the second part so feel free to skip ahead if that's all you're interested in. However, I encourage you to watch the entire interview as it's actually quite good especially the discussion of the BBC film which is a WW1 biopic about the MIA son of author Rudyard Kipling. Especially appropriate given the approach of Remembrance Day.

Soulja Lake

If there's any doubt that the song Crank Dat by Soulja Boy Tellem has become an unreasonably popular hit, one need only peruse good old Youtube to witness the ridiculous number of videos featuring otherwise respectable folk attempting to do the dance moves that go along with the ditty.

I myself do not like the song because, aside from the words "crank dat" and "Superman", I cannot understand what he's singing even with the aide of the close caption display function on my TV. Similarly, though I have not actually attempted the dance, I can only predict how foolish I would look in doing so. In summation: I'm old and I resent the song and accompanying dance for reminding me of that fact.

However, the participants in the following video look absolutely brilliant throwing down on the dance floor. Even though it appears to be during a children's ballet class. Maybe it was the free movement portion of the class. Nevertheless...

Check out the little boy in the front row WORKING IT OUT! He so killed it! Towards the end I thought he was going to pass out from overexertion but then he just stops and calmly walks off like he totally does this kind of thing every waking moment of his young life. All kinds of fierce!

Moss Brings Topshop To Holt Renfrew

Model/designer Kate Moss will debut the Christmas collection of her highly successful clothing line for Topshop at Holt Renfrew on Bloor St in Toronto as part of Holt's annual holiday window unveiling on November 6.

The Topshop line is Moss' fourth for the retailer, and is already available at their stores throughout the UK and Europe, via the Topshop website and from the US retailer Barney's New York. The line will also be available at the Holt Renfrew Yorkdale store following the initial rollout at the Bloor St flagship location.

The holiday window unveiling event runs from 7 - 8pm and includes a performance by legendary soul diva Aretha Franklin. The festivities are free - the clothes, unfortunately, are not.

Eurotrash

The 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards are looking to be as classy as usual what with Snoop Dogg manning the helm as host and performances expected from Babyshambles and Amy Winehouse. There are even whisperings of a duet by Winehouse and Babyshambles leader Pete Doherty - we'll see how that goes.

It sounds like I'm being facetious but the EMAs are probably one of the few genuinely entertaining shows left and if I didn't already have plans this evening I'd most likely be tuning in to watch the event in all it's craptastic glory.

You can catch the EMAs live at MTV.ca beginning at 4pm today or watch the television broadcast on MuchMusic at 7pm this evening.
