A Little Heads Up, Please!
Season 4 of The L Word started up on Showcase last night (August 30) and, for some reason, I had no idea. I only happened to find out as I was doing a bit of random channel-surfing.
Way to go with the promotion Showcase. While I've seen the ad for that new Holly Hunter show dozens of times, I've seen nary a one for The L Word. It doesn't even make the main page of the Showcase website - we just get Hunter front and centre once again who, after all these years, still manages to creep me out a little. If I wasn't so lazy, I would've done what my girl Merdypops did and just downloaded all the episodes when they aired last winter in the states.
Anyway, looks to be promising seaon what with the likes of Cybil Shepherd and Marlee Matlin joining the cast. Also, I believe this is the season that Goldfrapp performs in one of the episodes. Hopefully, we'll get a lot more of the provocative storylines and a bit of a cap on the girly-porn - maybe I'm just being an uptight breeder but, damn, I think even my Sapphic sisters might agree there is such a thing as too much snatch.
BTW Showcase, I expect much better of you when the new season of Weeds draws near.

CBGB Founder Dies
Beginning in the mid-70s, Kristal and the club played a huge role in fostering the careers of revolutionary musical acts such as the Ramones, Talking Heads, Patti Smith and Blondie. The club was forced to permanently close it's doors in October of 2006.
Kristal, 75, died of complications from lung cancer yesterday (August 29).

Bjork Beatdown
Well, she's at it again. Click here for video of Bjork and her friend/assistant on August 27 at Gare du Nord in Paris, bringing a world of hurt to one particularly pesky photographer.
I'm sure it's all kinds of wrong that I adore her even more for her testiness with the paparazzi but I can't help myself. I just hope she doesn't whoop my ass if I try to take pictures of her at the Virgin Festival next month.

I mean, I love them both (and their Oceania collaboration) but I think the two of them as a team would just be asking for trouble.

Feist & Everyone She's Ever Met In Her Entire Life
The choir in question consisted of some of Feist's own Broken Social Scene crew as well as Nicole Atkins and members of The New Pornographers, The National, Grizzly Bear and Mates of State, all of whom were dressed in white with brightly coloured armbands (an homage of sorts to the original video).

A More Innocent Time
BTW much as I'm a fan of Jamie Foxx, buddy really needs to rethink his dumbass position on this particular issue. As a black woman and proponent of animal rights, I was hugely offended and completely baffled by his ignorant comments.

Happy Birthday Rupes!
Actor Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films) turns a grand 19 years old today. Rupert/Ron is one of my favourite aspects of the whole HP phenomenon, narrowly placing runner-up to my rather tragic crush on the Phelps/Weasley twins. Hmmm...it really does seem quite sad reading that last bit back to myself.
Ahem.
If it's still unclear why I love this ginger kid so much, click the above video taken at last weekend's V Festival (UK) to feast on the glory of Grint. The "squirty cream can" impression that he does at about the 1:29 mark is - not to oversell it - a moment that makes me want to be a better person.
UPDATE: I just noticed that actor/author Stephen Fry (who also happens to be the voice of the Harry Potter audio books) is celebrating a birthday today as well. Happy 50th Mr. Fry! I'm sure he and Rupes are currently in the midst of sharing an over-sized ice cream cake.

Vedder contributes two songs to the film - No More and Long Nights. He became involved in the project after meeting the subject of the doc, US serviceman Tomas Young who was injured during his tour of duty in Iraq.
Vedder also contributes music to the Sean Penn feature Into the Wild but there is, as yet, no word on whether the musician will attend the film's screening at the Festival.

TIFF Rocks Out

Least Surprising Announcement Ever

The Kings' Playlist
Only Matthew Followill (2nd from left), seems fully confident in ALL of the Kings of Leon's musical selections - his cousins and bandmates (from l - r) Jared, Nathan and Caleb Followill are, for some reason, more reluctant to make direct eye contact. If you're somewhat familiar with the band Kings of Leon, you've probably noted the change in musical direction from their debut 2003 EP Holy Roller Novocaine to their 3rd full-length album (and 4th proper release overall) Because of the Times in April of this year. The band has gone from a raucous, Southern rock-flavoured sound(no doubt inspired by the band members Tennessee/Oklahoma preacher's sons/nephew roots) to one that's more, dare I say, orchestral/power-pop in nature.
The band have made no secret of their changing influences, noting in particular their admiration for U2, a band who brought the Kings along as openers on their 2005 tour. The Kings went even further when, around the time of their most recent release, the fine Followill boys participated in the iTunes Celebrity Playlist series, collectively offering up about 30 selections which, they say, were in constant rotation over the past two years while they were touring and recording.
Given the band's musical evolution, the list makes perfect sense. There's the nod to their simpler upbringing (Roger Miller, Thin Lizzy), the discovery of The 60s (Nico, The Stooges, The Ronnettes), a little 70s punk (The Clash, The Buzzcocks), the new wave gloom of the 80s (Joy Division/New Order, Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus), 90s wall of sound (Spiritualized) right on up to the musical hodge podge that has marked the better half of this new century (Broken Social Scene, M83, Clinic). There's even a little classical music thrown in for good measure (Mozart).
Aside from the fact a good chunk of these songs lead me to reminisce about my high school/university days and, thus, make me feel quite old, the list overall presents a rather simple game of "spot the influence". Though, I must admit that there was one particular track that, when I first saw it, made me do a double-take and then collapse into a fit of giggles. Scroll down the list to see if you can pick it out, too. Hint: it's not the Pet Shop Boys.
- Grass Animal Collective
- All We Ever Wanted Was Everything Bauhaus
- Everybody’s Happy Nowadays - The Buzzcocks
- The Guns of Brixton - The Clash
- Evergreen The Brian Jonestown Massacre
- Lover's Spit Broken Social Scene
- Temporarily Blind Built To Spill
- The Return of Evil Bill Clinic
- Lorelei Cocteau Twins
- Six Different Ways The Cure
- Glass, Concrete and Stone David Byrne
- Save It for Later The English Beat
- Your Hand In Mine Explosions In The Sky
- Desire (Come and Get It) Gene Loves Jezebel
- I Wanna Be Your Dog The Stooges
- Atmosphere Joy Division
- Don't Save Us from the Flames M83
- Papa Was a Rodeo The Magnetic Fields
- Halloween The Misfits
- Ceremony New Order
- These Days Nico
- West End Girls Pet Shop Boys
- Invisible Sun The Police
- Hey - Pixies
- Love My Way The Psychedelic Furs
- My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died Roger Miller
- Be My Baby The Ronnettes
- Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Spiritualized
- The Boys Are Back in Town Thin Lizzy
- Snow Don't Fall Townes Van Zandt
- With or Without You U2
- Reservations Wilco
- Lacrimosa Orchestra Sinfonica dell'Universita Cattolica / Coro Sinfonico di Bie Mozart: Requiem
- Making Plans for Nigel XTC
- But Not Tonight Depeche Mode
Desire by Gene Loves Jezebel?!? BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Good lord, where in the world did they manage to get a hold of that goth-y/new wave, flouncy, weird-twin-thing, tune? And how does it become such a staple of their personal and professional lives that they actually refer to it as an influence?!? Though, since I first came across this list just over a week ago, that damn song seems to invade my mind and escape from my lips without warning or provocation. Um, OK, I see how that works now.
Of course, all the above listed tracks - including the one by GLJ - are available for download on iTunes.

Foos Cover Da Fire
The Foo Fighters appeared on BBC Radio 1 this past Friday (August 17) and, among other things, performed a rather faithful cover version of Arcade Fire's Keep the Car Running. They performed the same song as part of their set at the V Festival yesterday (August 19).
I've been pretty "meh" on the Foos since Pat Smear left the group but even I think it would have been nice if they'd added a little of their own rock vibe instead of going with this by-the-numbers version. Eh, I'm not gonna hate - it still sounds pretty good.
I'd be quite curious to hear Win Butler et al doing a full-on version of the Foos Everlong - now that would be something.

Jack Talk
Click here to be forwarded to the site of queen blogger Perez Hilton who scored himself a little exclusive with the brand new track by Just Jack (of Starz In Their Eyes fame) called I Talk Too Much featuring vocals by Kylie Minogue. Minogue hasn't released any new music since her 2004 single I Believe In You. Since then, she has been concentrating on battling breast cancer - she is currently cancer free.
It's quite a cool track but be aware that it is truly the creation of Just Jack and, as such, Kylie isn't featured that prominently on it. She pretty much just coos along until the 2 1/2 minute mark before her vocals properly kick in and, even then, it's rather short lived.

Mildly Unsettling Picture Post
The following photo comes from a feature article in the September 2007 issue of Harper's Bazaar.
In case you're not quite registering the full significance of the nekkid chick on couch, allow me to enlighten you. It's none other than rock and roll poop-disturber Courtney Love, shot in all her glory by fashion multi-tasker Karl Lagerfeld. See the entire feature here.
Now, I love me some Crazy Courtney and I know that she (like myself) has a love for the world of haute couture but I'm not sure that this spread (pun intended) was entirely necessary. Also, are we actually expected to believe that this is what Love really looks like right now? Really? Honest and for true? I mean, come on, even at her most glamourpuss - circa 1996/ The People vs. Larry Flynt - she didn't come close to looking this supermodel-esque. Personally, I'd rather see more of the real Courtney (scary as that may be at times) than this photoshopped bullshizz.
Moving on.
The next photo has been circulating on the ol' interweb for the last couple of days. It's one of the original supermodels, Cindy Crawford and her two children, Presley (8) and Kaya (5), at the High School Musical 2 premiere. Normally, none of those things would interest me but, I must admit, when I saw this photo I was fascinated.

OK, not surprisingly, the kids are gorgeous. They clearly got a generous helping of their mom's genes and, from what I can recall, their father (Rande Gerber) has some pretty respectable DNA as well. However, the child on the left is just mesmerizing - and that's the boy! It's almost preternatural. Seriously, it's what I'd imagine the angel Gabriel might look like if he were into grunge. Good thing his sister is pretty too or she'd develop some major insecurities by the time she hits puberty.

Sophie Ellis-BlytheDoll
I can't be the only one who sees it.
Ahem.
Trip the Light Fantastic, the third album from "posh-dance" diva Sophie Ellis-Bextor (the one on the right), came out back in May of this year. The latest single, Today the Sun's On Us, will be released on August 13.
I've recently become addicted to Groovejet (If This Ain't Love), a 2000 track by dj/producer Spiller for which Ellis-Bextor provided the vocals.
Blythe continues to be crazy cool.

Bust-ing Out For Summer

The fine folks at Bust magazine have recently updated the selections on their media player with a whole whack of cool tunes. I must say, it's about time - the last set were for April/May while June/July was skipped entirely.
Well, I suppose good things come to those who wait - the August/September player includes selections from Emily Haines, amiina, Rasputina and UNKLE featuring the Duke Spirit. If you don't already have access to the Bust Media Taster you can download the program for free here.
Also, don't forget to pick up a copy of the magazine itself featuring cover girl Rosario Dawson. It's the Fashion & Music issue which plumbs some of the current crop of bold tunesmiths for their takes on personal style. Included are Bjork, Bat For Lashes (one of my new, personal favourites), Art Brut and, um, Amy Winehouse.

Loooooooong Weeeeeekend!
- There is, of course, the continuing Caribana festivities (to August 12) which boasts a whole whack of actvities. The highlight is, arguably, the much aniticipated parade which takes place tomorrow (August 4) from between 9 & 10am to whenever the revellers pass out or the Jamaica float makes it grand appearance - whichever comes first.
- For something completely different there's Phophecy 2007, the fan conference on all things Harry Potter. Things kicked off yesterday (August 2) and continue until Sunday (August 5). Should be quite lively since the last book was just recently released. Be warned: this conference is geared towards adults and they are not playing - there's even a Knight Bus.
- As well, there's the much ballyhooed Toronto FC vs LA Galaxy match this Sunday (August 5). Still no word on whether superstar signing David Beckham will be suiting up (apparently his ankle is still a bit dodgy) but, at last word, he was planning to travel to the T-dot with his Galaxy teammates. Posh and the kids will not be joining him (Booooo!).
I'd be interested to see what might transpire should all three groups happen to meet up on neutral territory sometime Sunday afternoon. One hopes cooler heads would prevail but, if things devolve into an all out brouhaha (a la the brawl in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), one wonders if the final smackdown come in the form of intense waist-winin', a powerful header (to another head) or the dreaded Avada Kevada curse.
I honestly don't know if I'll be taking in any of these events. Chilling out on my roof garden patio for the next three days seems mighty appealing to me.

Hanson Makes Me Uncomfortable
Don't get me wrong, I'm actually a fan of the musical trio (do with that information what you will) but I'm still sort of stuck thinking of them as pre-pubescent girly-boys. I've only just gotten to the point where I can accept them as husbands and fathers and then I get this:
Taylor Hanson gets a handful of MTV Canada host Jessi Cruickshank while brother Issac eagerly awaits his turn. [source]
Gah! Hansons touching boobs really kind of makes me want to scratch my eyes out. I know at least two of them must have done more than that since they've got kids but it doesn't make this visual any more digestible.
