Fiona Gets Freaky
As I was searching YouTube for footage to go with my Zach Galifianakis post, I came across this heretofore unseen (by me) video for the The First Taste by Fiona Apple, from her debut 1996 album Tidal.
The clip is, well, really pretty craptastic. Only in the 90s would grope-happy, bi-curious coeds in body glitter be considered a worthy example of the sensuality and mystique that the song is supposed to embody. However, this is one of my favourite Fiona Apple songs and, like I said, I hadn't seen it before so it was a treat to finally have a gander at it.
It is quite apparent, though, why this video was much less popular than the soft-core brilliance that is Criminal.

Virgin Fest Update

The Toronto edition of Virgin Fest 2007 is a little over a month away (September 8 & 9) and a whole whack of local and international artists were added to the bill just this past week.
Some of the performers joining those already announced (like Bjork, M.I.A., Arctic Monkeys and Metric) include Biffy Clyro (pictured), Dragonette, The Carps, Enter Shikari and The Cinematics. More are still to be added in the coming weeks - get all the updates here.
Conspicuous in their absence are Swedish rockers The Hives. Having been added to the lineup mere weeks ago, the kick-ass quintet have dropped out (or were dropped) without announcement or explanation. Perhaps it's not a complete mystery: Howling Pelle et al are featured performers on the Timbaland track Throw It On Me (which I actually quite like) and were recently revealed as the opening act for Maroon 5's upcoming tour. The prospect of all that shiny pop scene coming into contact with the indie world may have been too much for some to fathom.

You Can't Tell Zach Nothing
Comedian Zach Galifianakis is well known for his dead-pan physical humour and he puts it to good use again with this remake of the video for Can't Tell Me Nothing by Kanye West. Joining him in this vaguely Amish Paradise-ish clip is Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy).

Fiona Apple looks on bemusedly as Zach Galifianakis emotes on her behalf in the video for Not About Love.
He does a pretty good job there but it doesn't really come close to his gut-busting appearence in the video for the Fiona Apple track Not About Love. The bits with him knee deep in the ocean are just priceless.

Damn, Mrs. Weasley! Badass Much?!?
I probably should have prefaced this post with a "Spoiler Alert!" tag but I feel it wasn't absolutely necessary since, even though I didn't finish reading Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows until yesterday, I'm sure it was a good three days after every English-speaking elementary school child on the planet.
Anyway, yes, I finally finished reading the book yesterday and I absolutely loved it even if the last chapter/epilogue did kind of make me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit. Aside from the super sweet (but oddly sparse) denouement, I found the book to be suspenseful, exciting, tense, tragic, funny, heart-breaking and satisfying. I must say, though, that author J.K. Rowling can be one cold-hearted woman: she didn't have any hesitations when it came to who faced the chopping block be it new parents (Lupin and Tonks), a cherished sibling (Fred Weasley) an underage wizard (Colin Creevy), a devoted house-elf (Dobby), or a totally innocent owl (Hedwig).
Well, it was a comfort that my Ron was spared and, even though I would have been OK with the alternative, Harry made it out alive, too. BTW I noticed that young Mr. Potter gets naked quite a bit in this book - at least three times by my count and on one of those occasions there are six Potters in the buff. Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but I wonder if Rowling, anticipating future films, was having a laugh with Daniel Radcliffe's recent experience on the London stage.
But, for right now, that's it.
UPDATE - 27/07/07: OK, so I didn't even last 24 hours. Click here for video from a Today Show interview in which Rowling, among other things, reveals more detail on the fates of the HP characters than that fanfic-inspired epilogue from Deathly Hallows. It actually made me more annoyed when I heard what she left out and why. Anyway, you can also check out Dateline NBC this Sunday (July 29) at 7pm EDT for a full hour on Rowling and the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Things To Pass The Time While Doing Time

If You Vote For It, They Will Come
Since the Spice Girls announced their comeback tour several weeks ago, there have many complaints from fans who do not live in or near one of the 8 cities scheduled to host the much anticipated gigs. In response, the group have introduced Spice Up Your City, a chance for fans to vote for the city which they believe should be included on the tour.
Simply select your desired city (and country), register your personal information and, when all the votes are tallied, the city with the most support will be designated the Spice City. Get clicking!
UPDATE - 27/07/01: Four cities have been added to the tour including Vancouver, BC on December 2 (the new kick-off date). These additions are separate from the Spice Up Your City challenge and you can still vote for your hometown to be included on the tour.

Seriously?!?
- Ponder, if you will, how lame one would have to be in order to get arrested at a John freakin' Mayer concert.
- There's really no excuse for this - I mean, the song wasn't that good.

Harry Potter And The Shirking Of Responsibilities

Many of you know that I am one of those "Harry Potter people". As well, unless you've been experiencing a severe form of sensory deprivation, you must also be aware that the latest and final volume in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released today (apparently selling at a rate of 3 books per second since they became available at 12:01 this morning) and I just received my copy mere hours ago. Thus, I will be spending the next few days with my nose buried deep in text, devouring all the details of the ultimate fates of the characters (Please don't die Ron!) in J.K. Rowling's literary world and may be a little lax in the upkeep of my blogging. For real.
In the meantime, here's a bit of an update on my Mercury Prize post from a few days ago.
Many of the artists on the 2007 shortlist (including frontrunners Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse and Dizzee Rascal) have performed in Toronto recently. Next Thursday (June 26), Irish singer Fionn Regan will make his first T-Dot appearance at The Rivoli with selections from his Mercury nominated debut album The End of History.
Be one of the first outside of the UK to see this up-and-comer perform live and, should he walk away with the Mercury come September, hold bragging rights over your music-geek friends for years to come.

Daddy's Little Girl

That's 17-year old Daisy Lowe, the recently revealed first-born child of Brit rocker Gavin "Mr. Gwen Stefani" Rossdale, on the August 2007 cover of i-D magazine with her boyfriend Will Blondelle.
Lowe, a model/socialite, and 20-year old Blondelle, lead singer of the eponymous rock band, were shot by noted photographer/professional perv Terry Richardson.
Either Daisy is tired of having baby brother Kingston steal the spotlight or (more likely) she's starting to take after her infamous mother, Pearl.

Ben And Esthero Go Commercial
I'm one of those people who tends to work my remote into a frenzy in order to avoid television commercials. I have a very short attention span and unless an ad can get me hooked in the first couple of seconds, I'm off in a flash to explore the rest of my digital cable world.
One thing that usually gets me to pause is when a commercial employs a catchy tune. Not so much a hokey jingle but a full-fledged pop-style song. Recently, I've noticed a few of ads that use songs by two of my favourite artists.
First there's one of the current Zeller's ads which is using a song Everyday is a Holiday With You by Canadian songstress Esthero. That song - taken from her most recent album, Wikkid L'il Girls - was co-written with Sean Lennon so Zeller's can now kind of claim to be associated with a bit of Beatles' history. Click here for a live 2005 performance of the song by Esthero featuring Sean Lennon and accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Then there's that new Telus ad - the one with all the brightly coloured fish. It features the song We Are All In This Together by Australian pop tune smith Ben Lee, taken from his most recent album Awake is the New Sleep. Another song, Catch My Disease, from the same album was recently used in a Dell computer commercial. You can check out both tunes on Lee's MySpace page.
Let me just state, for the record, that I don't feel as if these artists have "sold out" because they allowed their songs to be used for corporate purposes. Although both have achieved relative commercial success they are certainly not superstars by any means. I actually think can be a good career move for lesser known artists to have their work exposed to a group of people who might not otherwise get to hear them. Plus, they (hopefully) get a nice amount of financial compensation.

Rupert Touches Down In The T-Dot
Rupert Grint presses flesh and poses for photos with some obviously thrilled fans yesterday at the Toronto premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. [source]
OK, seriously, how cool is Rupert Grint?
For those of you not readily able to put a face to the name, Grint is the young actor best known for playing Harry Potter's best mate and sidekick, Ron Weasley, in the film adaptations of the wildly popular book series. He was in Toronto yesterday to attend the premiere of the latest installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and to do a little sightseeing. Click here for an article from the Toronto Star which chronicles his visit.
Alright, back to why Grint totally rules. First of all, there's that name: Rupert Grint. It has to go down as one of the all time best monikers I've ever come across. As one of my co-workers observed, "It's like a name plucked out of classic literature."
Then there's the hair: quite wonderfully ginger and floppy. I think if I were ever to meet him I'd have the uncontrollable urge to tousle that mop top of his and then serve him tea with buttered scones. Um yeah, that's probably all kinds of inappropriate. Let's pretend I never mentioned that.
Grint always seems slightly more laid back then his two co-stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). While Radcliffe and Watson always seem quite proper in dress and demeanor (nothing wrong with that, of course), Grint tends to be much more plainspoken and often favours a standard uniform of jeans, a t-shirt and a rumpled jacket.
A couple of final things I find quite endearing about Grint. One: he professes an acute case of arachnophobia. It may sound odd but I find it quite refreshing he would admit to that fear when most other (teen) actors would feign bravado. Second: he just bought an ice cream van. Apparently it's been a dream of his since he was a young lad to own one and he figured it would be a good investment in case the whole acting gig doesn't pan out in the long term.
Gotta love it!

Movin' On Up...
To a dee-luxe apartment
In the the sky-yi-yi!
Yes, dear readers, tomorrow I will finally move into the condo I purchased almost a month ago. As such, PDCC will be on hiatus for the next few days - mostly due to the fact that my internet service doesn't get hooked up in the new place until Monday but also because I'll probably be too exhausted to attempt anything even resembling a coherent blog post.
Have a good weekend!

A Spot Of T (And CO2)

Good lord but the Brits do love their festivals. Seems as if the last of the revellers have just now straggled out of Glastonbury and here we are on the eve of not one but two musical extravaganzas.
First up is T in the Park, Scotland's annual (since 1994) contribution to the festival scene which takes place this Friday through Sunday (July 6 - 8) in a disused airfield at Balado, Perth & Kincross. T never fails to provide an embarrassment of musical riches to the festival faithful and this year's roster of acts is no exception. The lineup includes: Air, Interpol, Tokyo Police Club, Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal, The Sounds, The Long Blondes, Biffy Clyro, The Gossip, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, CSS, Camera Obscura, Arcade Fire, Babyshambles, Wu Tang Clan, Kings of Leon, Scissor Sisters, Kasabian and dozens more.
Many of the acts scheduled for the 2007 T will also be performing at this weekend's (July 6 & 7) Oxegen festival across the way in Ireland. So that's two jam-packed festivals in relatively close proximity on the same weekend and both have long since sold out. It certainly does make one wonder when the good citizens of the UK manage to fit in such minor obligations like sleep and work.

Frodo And Gore On The Fringe
The 2007 Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival kicks off today in various locales around the city. Among the approximately 140 productions to choose from are two that poke a little fun at some current pop culture topics.
First up there's Lord of the Rings: The Musical: The Musical! which is pretty much exactly what you think it is. Billed as "the true(ish) story behind the funniest flop in Toronto history", LOTR: TM: TM! hopes to shed light on the reasons behind the failure of what was to be this city's economic saviour from the SARS fallout (though it was obvious to pretty much everyone outside of the original production). Forbidden love, dancing orcs and a Gollum Ă Gollum duet ensue.
Then there's An Inconvenient Musical, again fairly obvious in it's inspiration. From the creators of SARSical, this production takes a lighthearted jab at Al Gore's doom-and-gloom (albeit frighteningly accurate) climate change power-point presentation, An Inconvenient Truth, and it's unexpected result in turning the former US VP and presidential candidate from political loser into eco-rock star. The perfect preface to this weekend's Live Earth concert extravaganza.
The 19th annual Fringe Festival continues until July 15, get all your ticket and venue details here.

The Doctor's New Companion
It looks like, come this Christmas, Tardis crew-member Martha could have some competition for the attention and affections of the mysterious Doctor Who. Worse luck, it won't be some space alien with three arms and blue skin but the all-kinds-of-adorable Australian pop pixie herself, Kylie Minogue.
After months of rumours and speculation, the BBC finally made the official announcement today that Minogue will appear as a featured guest in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special. The episode, entitled Voyage of the Damned, begins filming this month for air in December. Details of the plot - and Minogue's specific role in it - are still under wraps though it is known that the story picks up where the recently aired season finale left off.
I've never been very into Doctor Who (I only ever made a concerted effort to watch when Christopher Eccleston played the lead - for obvious reasons) but I'm a Kylie fan and I'm pretty curious to see how she'll be used. Methinks "disco-fied cyborg babe" will figure heavily into her character construct.
Click here for the official announcement in full but be warned: several unnecessary Kylie-related puns lie therein.

Concert For Diana

A reminder that the tribute concert for the late Princess Diana is airing right now on CTV and continues until 5pm EDT.
The concert was organized by her two sons, Princes William and Harry, in order to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her death and celebrate her life on what would have been her 46th birthday. Some of the performers scheduled for the event include Bryan Ferry, Lily Allen, Duran Duran, Elton John, Nataha Bedingfield, Kanye West, Tom Jones, The English National Ballet, Joss Stone and Pharrell Williams.
Don't worry if you aren't able to watch all 6 hours and you miss your favourite performer: CTV will air a highlights special at 7pm and you can see video of all the performances on the CTV broadband network.
