Two Words: Co-Headlining Tour

The Verve circa 1997, around the time of their biggest hit, Bittersweet Symphony: (from l - r) Peter Salisbury, Simon Jones, Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Tong. Tong is the lone no-show for the reunion.

Monumentally less splashy, but arguably more welcome, than yesterday's Spice Girls reunion announcement comes word that another force of the British music scene in the 90s is returning to the fold. Wigan's finest, The Verve, have confirmed their reformation as well as plans for a new album and tour this fall.

Seems Richard Ashcroft et al have kissed and made up and were back in the recording studio earlier this month. Their website states that they will break for the rest of the summer (perhaps they're starting to get on each others' nerves again already) and then return to complete the sessions. Tickets for the UK tour go on sale next Friday (July 6).

No word on what prompted the reunion though it may have something to do with Ashcroft finally realizing that, though he's the group's chief songwriter, fans were never going fully embrace his solo material.

Spice World Redux

Posh, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Scary get back in the game.

It's official!

Nineties' "girl power" promoters the Spice Girls announced that the group has reunited for a tour and greatest hits album.

All five original members - Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham, Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown, Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton, Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell and Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisolm - gathered this morning in London for a photo call and press conference to outline the reunion details.

The tour will encompass 11 cities worldwide, beginning in Los Angeles on December 7 of this year and ending in Beunos Aires on January 24 of 2008. The tour is being billed as a thank you to fans but will also promote and coincide with the release of the greatest hits album.

No doubt, the Spice Tour Bus will be a tad more crowded this time around as the all the women plan to bring their children - 7 Spice spawn between the five members - along for the ride as well. In fact, it's Bunton's impending due date that will prevent the group from performing at this weekend's Princess Diana tribute concert.

Mel B must be on Cloud 9 right about now - not only does she have a proper (albeit temporary) job again but she also won a moral victory this past weekend when DNA tests confirmed that Eddie "Smarmy Bastard Spice" Murphy is indeed the father of her newborn daughter.

Live Earth Chucks Turkey Leg

Al Gore at a June 12 press conference in Turkey to promote the Live Earth event.

Bad pun notwithstanding...

Purple Concerts, the Istanbul organization charged with staging the Turkish installment of the Live Earth event, announced earlier today their country's participation had officially been cancelled.

The Turkish concerts were initially shelved last Friday amid reports of "lack of government support and insufficient sponsors". There had been an attempt by Live Earth organizer (former US VP) Al Gore to save the festivities, potentially scaling the production down from an outdoor extravaganza to an indoor concert. However, it was deemed that there just wasn't enough time to stage any sort of live performances (the global event is set for July 7). At this point, there is still discussion of having giant video screens available at the Istanbul site for viewing of the other concerts.

Live Earth concerts in the other eight participating cites (New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Hamburg, Rio De Janeiro, Johannesburg, Shanghai) are all still a go with scheduled performances from dozens of artists including The Police, Kanye West, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge and Ludacris.

Lennons Rekindle Brotherly Love

Sean and Julian Lennon

John Lennon's sons Julian,44, and Sean, 31, have recently kissed and made up after an 8-year feud.

Julian (the ex-Beatle's firstborn by first wife, Cynthia) revealed to the New York Post over the weekend that he hadn't spoken to his younger half-brother since making disparaging comments about Sean's mother (John's widow), Yoko Ono.

The elder brother took steps to end the rift by surprising Sean backstage after one of the younger Lennon's concerts in Easter Europe earlier this year. Julian tagged along for the remainder of the tour, sleeping on the floor of the bus.

Glasto 2007 Wrap-Up

By all accounts, the 2007 edition of the Glastonbury Festival went off without a hitch despite the need to employ one's Wellies (but, really, the use of Wellies is to be expected at such events). And, um, there was that one fatal overdose. As well, still no news as to why M.I.A. cancelled her set though we do get this comment via her website.

Some of the artists that did manage to make it to the stage include: Lily Allen, The Who, Manic Street Preachers, Babyshambles, Kaiser Chiefs, Chemical Brothers, Amy Winehouse, Gogol Bordello, The Gossip, Charlotte Hatherley, Klaxons and Super Furry Animals.

Here are images of some of the other Glastonbury 2007 performers [source]:

The Horrors do their gruesome best.

Three of Bob Marley's (seemingly endless supply of) progeny help honour the 30th anniversary of their father's landmark album, Exodus. That's Damian "Jr. Gong" in the middle, Stephen on the right an (correct me if I'm wrong) Ziggy on the left.

Either someone's lost their Wellies or Glastonbury emergency personnel need to be contacted immediately.

Iggy Pop - your guess is as good as mine.

Miss Shirley Bassey shows all the whipper-snappers how it's done and gives a shout out to the Arctic Monkeys.

Speaking of those Sheffield lads, check out their impressive rendition of the Bassey classic Diamonds Are Forever which they performed during their Glasto set.

Ageing Gracefully

Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
Haaaaaappy Anniversary!
Happy happy happy happy happy happy anniversary!
Happy happy happy happy happy happy anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
Haaaaaappy Anniversary!

Yes, that's right people, Please, Do Come Closer is celebrating it's 1st birthday today. Much love to my fellow bloggers
Sharelle (who harassed me into starting my own blog) and Merdypops for their support and encouragement.

As well, many thanks to anyone out there who had patience enough to read my rambling thoughts and barely rational rants - there's a lot to choose from out there on the interweb, so it's cool that you'd stop to peruse my humble blog, however brief your stay may have been.

My that was touching. I'm off to stuff my face with cake. Not because of the anniversary though, just because I've got cake.

Over The Rainbow

Lady Miss Kier (centre) - back in the day with her Deee-lite cohorts Dmitry (left) and Towa Tei (right) - promises to give good beats at Pride this Sunday.

Happy Pride!

Hopefully everyone's enjoying this lovely Pride weekend. Though I think the celebrations actually kicked off last week. Or maybe it's a month long celebration now, I'm really not sure.

Anyhoo...

The coup de grace of Pride, The Big Parade, kicks off tomorrow (June 24) at about 2pm from Bloor & Church, makes it's way over to Yonge, struts down to Gerrard and then back over to Church. The whole thing should wrap up at around 5pm (or whenever the last tiara and feather boa disappear into the horizon).

Aside from the main event, there are plenty of other Pride activities to keep oneself occupied - this week's issue of
NOW is a fairly handy resource for all the pertinent details. One thing I definitely want to see is the DJ set by Lady Miss Kier (ex of Deee-lite) who hits the Wellesley stage at 6pm.

Here Comes The Bride, All Dressed In Animal Prints

Moss and Doherty in publicity photos from the Roberto Cavalli fall/winter campaign

The groom might be similarly dressed if the oft-speculated Kate Moss-Pete Doherty wedding finally comes fruition, as per the wishes of Doherty, sometime this summer.

The London Times yesterday (June 21) published excerpts from The Books of Albion: the collected writings of Peter Doherty, a work that chronicles public and personal roller-coaster of troubled musician beginning in 1999 and winding up in early 2007.

It is in one of the final entries (January 31 2007) that the chief Babyshamles man states his desire to marry long-time love Moss, provided he can remain "smack and needle-free". Doherty has endured a long and very public battle with drug addiction which, among other things: prompted his dismissal from his first band, The Libertines; saw him sentenced to prison after being arrest for the burglary of a property belonging to his best friend (and Libertines bandmate) Carl Barat and; lead to several stints in rehab programs with varying degrees of success. I think he's back in rehab right now but, it is Pete Doherty we're talking about here so, who the hell knows.

In any case, should this wedding fantasy actually become a reality for the pair they may shun the traditional Vera Wang gown/rented tux garb for ensembles much more suited to their rock and roll couple persona - and at a considerable discount. It was announced last week the Moss and Doherty will appear individually in the fall/winter campaigns for the Roberto Cavalli women's- and men's-wear lines.

It's been a pretty exciting June thus far for the Italian designer. Earlier this week, H&M announced that Cavalli would be next designer to produce a limited edition line of clothing for the retail giant. Cavalli will follow in the shoes of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf, all of whom managed to incite consumer frenzy when their respective collections were released in each of the previous three years.

I've gotten pieces from all three of these collections but I don't think I'll be lining up when the Cavalli gear hits the racks - he's never really been one of my favourites but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. We'll all get a chance to see what he has to offer when the collection becomes available starting November 8, 2007.

Sweet Music Treat

Trust the British to combine fatty, decadent confections with a summer music festival.

Ice cream entrepreneurs Ben & Jerry's are the masterminds behind Sundae on the Common is scheduled next Saturday and Sunday (July 28 and 29) in Clapham Common, London. Performers include Noisettes, The Proclaimers, Ordinary Boys, Kate Nash and The Bees.

Tickets are a very reasonable £8.75 (plus £3.50 in service charges) - which works out to a total of about $25 CAN - and includes all the free ice cream you can manage to shove down your gob. All proceeds from the event go towards the funding of a solar panel project in India. Get all the details here.

Arcade Fire And Others Work That Mojo

British music magazine Mojo hosted it's annual awards ceremony this past Monday (June 18) which saw many new and season players in the industry walking away with awards.

Indie rockers Arcade Fire took top honours as Best Live Act, beating out the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse. Winehouse did manage to score on another of her three nominations - Song of the Year (Rehab).

Other winners included The Good, The Bad & the Queen (Best Album - Self Titled), Bob Marley (Classic Album - Exodus), Bjork (Prestigious Inspiration) and The Stooges (Lifetime Achievement).

Joy Division was given the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, an honour that was slightly marred when former JD members Peter Hook and Stephen Morris confirmed that New Order (the band that emerged from the ashes of Joy Division) had indeed split up. Sort of.

Third member Bernard Sumner (also formally of Joy Division) failed to show up at the Mojo ceremonies and Hook revealed that they were no longer on speaking terms. When a Mojo reporter noted that both Hook and Sumner had attended the Cannes premiere of the Joy Division biopic Control, Hook retorted, "Yeah, and Bernard didn't f**king speak to me the whole time I was there." [source]Morris didn't seem clear either way.

BRMC Keep On Riding

No need to fret kids, the BRMC are just fine.

Good news for everyone who got spooked by the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's cryptic suggestions of their own demise at their Toronto show back on May 26. And by everyone, I mean myself, Melissa, Stephanie, Denise and Mike.

Looks like the California trio are going to be around for some time to come...or at least through September of this year. The boys will be teaming up with Kings of Leon as support on a still-in-the-planning-stages US fall tour. At least one of the shows will be at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

So, good news for all us BRMC fans though I'm still a little wary about what all the ominous "we don't know when we'll be back again" chatter was all about. Maybe the (Iran-born/UK-raised) drummer is having issues with his work visa again. Though you'd think that would make a US tour even more troublesome. OK, I'm going to stop writing now.

The NME

As in the Nylon Musical Express. That's how we may have to start referring to Nylon magazine and it's little brother publication, Nylon For Guys. Both mags have a reputation for being on the pulse of the latest musical trends and both current issues are filled with all the hottest acts that will be making news over the summer months and beyond.

Nylon proper boasts a jam packed music issue featuring a cover story on The White Stripes as well as articles (of varying length) on almost 300 other artists including: Interpol, Spoon, Kings of Leon, The Horrors, The Pipettes, Bryan Ferry (yes, really), The Plastiscines, Feist, Bat For Lashes, Mandy Moore, Rooney, Peter Bjorn & John, Tokyo Police Club and The Knife.

As well, there's a Q&A with Pamela "I'm with the band" Des Barres about her latest tome on groupie culture, overviews of the music scene in eight cities around the world and a tribute to the style of Steve Nicks. All this and I've barely scratched the surface of what's contained in this issue.

Plus, since the magazine itself and all the artists contained within have a MySpace page (cuz' that's the rule now) you can practically listen to the entire issue online.

While the current Nylon For Guys doesn't claim to be a music issue per se, it does include quite a bit of music-related content including features on the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Amiina, Handsome Furs, dj/producer Mark Ronson and Ozzy Osbourne.

Plus there are plenty of articles on cool gear (including a cover story on Bape founder, Nigo) and the latest in male-geared toiletries (do guys say "toiletries"?) to help any so-inclined fellow to achieve that rock star look in no time.

The New Musical Express better watch out lest the Nylon crew entirely takes over it's turf.

New Paris Hilton Video Hits The Web

Paris the Heiress gets the South Park treatment.

Unlike that other video, however, this one is actually entertaining - probably because it doesn't actually feature the recently jailed heiress herself.

Paris in Jail is a music video parody created by Allan Murray and Sean Haynes of Omovies.com. Set to the tune of Paris' single Stars Are Blind (remember when she wanted to be a singer for about 3 days last year?) it features clever lyrics that not only poke fun at Hilton and her current legal woes but also examine the state of pop culture and celebrity as a whole. No, really.

So, if you're not already in total Paris overload, take 2 minutes and 47 seconds to check out this clip. Feel free to remark "That's hot!" as a critique once you've completed the viewing.

Spice Reunion Looks Good To Go

All five original Spice Girls on a July 1997 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Yes, they really were that popular once.

It seems like the oft-rumoured/delayed Spice Girls reunion might actually come to fruition sometime in the foreseeable future. Maybe.

Melanie C (aka Sporty Spice), long thought to be the lone hold-out of the group, revealed to BBC Radio (excerpted by BBC Online) today that she is now open to getting back together with her old Spice mates, though only on a temporary basis. Chisolm (the singer's real last name) said of the proposed reunion:

it would just be for "a very short space of time... a final goodbye" and a thank you to fans. [source]

The online article went on to say that a whirlwind Spice Girls mini-tour is set for later this year after Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) gives birth and to coincide with the release of the Spice Girls greatest hits album.

Though I was never a Spice Girls fan, I have to admit I'm curious too see how this "reunion" works out. Specifically, I wonder how long it will take before the verbal bitch-slapping (especially between notorious "frenemies" Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown and Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell) starts up again. Hey, even The Police only made it through one complete reunion gig before the fur started to fly.

Camera-Shy KOL

OK, first thing's first.

The Kings of Leon gig this part Tuesday (June 12) in Toronto was fantastic. The Followill boys were in fine form, treating the ecstatic crowd to a range of songs from their 3-album career including their most recent, 2007's Because of the Times. The tunes were tight, the pants were tight - it was all good.

I'm just a little dismayed with all the anal-ness over fans taking pictures during the concert. It's never been an issue at any of the previous 4 KOL shows I've attended including the last one in 2005 which, like the most recent one, took place at the Warehouse (or Kool Haus, or whatever the hell it's called these days).

It's not like I have to take photos - obviously, it doesn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the performance - it just would have have been nice if someone had told me it wasn't allowed. Like as I was going through the security check...and they searched my tiny, sparsely-filled purse...in which my digital camera was clearly visible. They only thing they asked me was to make sure my mobile was turned off.

So there I was, innocently snapping a few photos of opening band Snowden (who were quite impressive btw) when I was descended upon by two burly bouncers, one of whom promptly marched me back out to the venue foyer so I could leave my camera at coat check. Thanks to the lovely gent who covered the $2.50 charge for me (I'd left all my cash at my office down the street) - I owe you a beer mate.

My point is (and I do have one) that I just don't get why the Kings wouldn't allow their fans to take photos this time around - they must have spent all that time on their hair for a reason. And, yes, it was the decision of the band (as opposed to the venue) to ban cameras and other recording devices - my "security escort" (who was actually quite nice) showed me the performance/rider thingy from the band's management.

Even the notoriously neurotic Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) will let her fans snap away as long as the the flash is turned off. Further, none of the staff at the John Geilgud Theatre even batted an eye when my friend and I took pictures of the stage set-up for Equus - and, before you ask, that's the only thing we photographed.

Anyway, it was just a minor annoyance but I'm guessing some of you more intrepid folk out there managed to sneak a few shots. This judging by the number of time I got a big bouncer belly in my face as, every few minutes, one of them climbed the barriers by the stage where I was standing to shine his little pen flashlight into the crowd in an attempt to weed out an surreptitious amateur photog. If you're one of those people (or know one of those people) and are reading this, feel free to forward those photos to me and I'll gladly post them.

Lolla Schedule And One-Day Passes Available Now

The Lollapalooza schedule was released yesterday (June 12). I thought it seemed ridiculously early since Lolla isn't until the weekend of August 3 but, according to my records, it's actually only 10 days earlier than last year.

Not coincidentally, the release of the schedule coincides with the release of single day passes which are priced at $80US.

The schedule is, of course, still considered tentative as more artists are likely to be added as the festival date draws closer.

Cat Power Officially The Greatest

It was announced today that Cat Power (née Chan Marshall) was awarded the 2006 Shortlist Music Prize for her most recent release The Greatest.

The disc beat out over 50 other notable entries by the likes of The Strokes, Lupe Fiasco, CSS, We Are Scientists, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, Mew and Belle & Sebastian.

Other artists such as Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Sufjan Stevens and the members of Franz Ferdinand were responsible for selecting and voting on the nominees. The Cat Power album was one of Coyne's personal selections.

Not sure if there's an awards ceremony for this thing but if there is, you know current Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel) muse Marshall will be the red carpet queen.

Happy Belated Birthday...

...to me - and to a few other people.

I had a great day - took a walk in the sunshine, saw some of the Luminato installations, had a bubble tea, went to my mom's for a birthday dinner, stalked Albert Hammond Jr. - and I thought it would be interesting to see who else was doing a little celebrating on June 10. Here are some of the other people who blew out the candles yesterday:

•Bassist Kim Deal (and her twin sister Kelly) of The Pixies

•Guitarist Joey Santiago of The Pixies

•Actress Gina Gershon

•Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)

•Model-actress Elizabeth Hurley

•Guitarist Emma Anderson (Lush)

•Singer Faith Evans

•Actor DJ Qualls (Hustle and Flow)

•Actor Shane West (ER)

Funny how two members of the Pixies celebrate on the same day - they're one of my favourite bands and I had no idea.

Here's our horoscope (maybe not so relevant a day late) in case you were curious:

Thought for the Day: The moon, which has been in fiery Aries since yesterday morning, joins with Mars. You'll find the urge to be more assertive, dynamic and bold in your forward advances.

IF TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Progress is pending on a plan or project that has been close to your heart. Some unexpected changes will bring a rare chance to get past a stubborn impasse. [source]

I'm A Homeowner Y'All!

Excuse me for being a little self-serving with the blog today but I'm very excited because I've completed closing on my condo purchase.

I'm just now off to pick up my keys (My Keys!) so I can head on over to my new place (My Place!), touch my walls (My Walls!) and have a celebratory glass of bubbly.

Theme music for this auspicious day: Our House - Madness. OK, it's not entirely apropos but I just can't seem to get It out of my head today.

Strokes Back Online

Totally not what The Strokes' new site looks like.

After being under construction for what seemed like an eternity, The Strokes brand spanking new website was up and running as of last Tuesday (June 29).

I've only had a chance to check it out briefly but I think it looks quite spiffy - lots of cool graphics and fun stuff that happens when you click certain areas. Yup, that's about the extent of my technical critiquing skills.

There is, of course, requisite info about what's going on in The Strokes' camp including a new version of the video for You Only Live Once and details on Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo tour. The lovely Albert touches down in Toronto this Sunday (June 10) which just happens to my birthday. See you in the front row!

OCO Drop In On TO

The 2007 NXNE Festival kicks off tomorrow (June 7) and, if you're planning to attend and are anything like me, you're probably having quite a time choosing which of the approximately 450 acts playing at one of the various venues around the city you might attempt to go see.

Allow me to make a suggestion.

ok city ok is a Tokyo band (with some Texas flavour) scheduled to play Holy Joe's this Friday (June 8). Kay (the Texan) from the band sent me an email with the head's up so I made my way over to their MySpace page and discovered they've got some pretty rockin' tunes. Plus, they don't hit the stage until 10pm so you should be able to catch them after the Dino Jr. gig is done (cause I know that's where everyone's going to be, myself included).

Happy festivalling everyone!

Looks Like PoshTV Is Back On The Air

Whew!

The rumours began last week when Posh ditched filming to attend Becks' return to the football pitch with the English national team last Friday in London. Though NBC execs were apparently a bit miffed with Posh, it seems that everyone involved is still very enthusiastic about the show.

The untitled series should begin airing later this summer.
